SSERVI’s Center for Lunar Science and Exploration (CLSE) team at LPI/USRA, led by Principal Investigator David Kring, shared another fantastic example of success for their high school research program: two students from South Sevier High School in Monroe, UT, coached by Debbie Morgan, placed first in their category and were overall finalists in the Southern Utah Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

The students from were recognized for their study of secondary crater morphologies. They will receive $1000 scholarships to attend Southern Utah University and were invited to attend the 2018 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair next month (May 13-18). This event is related to the historically famous Westinghouse Science Talent search.

As always, CLSE’s student research program’s success is due largely to the effort of LPI’s Andy Shaner for managing the program and the tremendous support of their mentors, in this case Lillian Ostrach.

About the Southern Utah Science and Engineering Fair
The Southern Utah Science and Engineering Fair (SUSEF) is a regional science competition for students in grades 5-12. It has been held on the campus of Southern University for over 35 years and has been affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair since 1974.

Projects from each of two fairs (Junior and Senior) are judged and first through third place awards are given in each category. Numerous special awards from various corporate bodies and government agencies are awarded. In 2017, over $10,000 in awards and prizes were given, including SUU scholarships and all expense paid trips for our top finalists to the International Science & Engineering Fair held in Los Angelas, California.

Participants in grades 5-8 may enter the Junior Fair. The top 10% of Junior Fair projects in grades 6-8 may be nominated for the Broadcom MASTERS Competition, held in Washington D.C. in October.

Participants in grades 9-12 may enter the Senior Fair. Outstanding Senior Fair projects will be eligible to advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where they compete against students from over 40 nations for millions of dollars in prize and scholarship money.
